DECEMBER MATTERS AGAIN FOR THE CHARGERS SATURDAY NIGHT

Come saturday night you will either be visited by Santa Claus or The Grinch. That is because for the first time since the Chargers knocked the Chiefs out of going into the playoffs in week 17 at the Murph. Now they will meet again but this time it is in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium. Santa elves has gifted the Chargers already with the weather. The forecast calls for a high of 49 and a low of 31 with clear skies above.

The schedule makers nailed this one as it is a prime time game being aired to the nation on the NFL Network. Several Charger fans are packing their bags and are headed to Kansas City to root the boys along for this potential AFC West Division Winner showdown. They will start the celebration early the night before at Johnny's Tavern for a charger fan meetup. A viewing party is also scheduled at Cali Comfort BBQ in Spring Valley here in San Diego.

The two teams are equal in win and losses so far entering week 15 at 7-6. A win here will project the Chargers from the 8th seed into the 4th seed and looking at a home playoff game likely against the #3 seed coming from the AFC South. The Titans and Jaguars will meet in week 17 in Tennessee.  A Chargers win gives the Bolts a 2 game lead with 2 to play. A loss could end their season as the Chiefs will have a 2 game lead with 2 to go.

Momentum favors the Chargers  the winners of 4 in a row. Philip Rivers December record is 34-16. He does love football in December. The Chiefs who have been faltering of late before beating the Raiders sunday in Kansas City is either still reeling or coming back to what they were in September The Chargers have been red hot lately although mostly against teams with a losing record.

The offense punted a total of 51 times in the first 9 games. Since then Anthony Lynn only called for punts 5 times. They have outscored their opponents 131-53 in the win streak and finally scored for the first time this season on their opening drive against the Redskins.

One reason for their surprising streak is Rivers has only been sacked a league low 15 times in 2017. The receivers of Keenan Allen and Tyrell Williams have exploded with Hunter Henry complimenting them. When they use Hunter correctly he is as unstoppable as Keenan Allen. Melvin Gordon is inching his was towards a 1,000 yard season. Travis Coons 3 field goals seems to have ended the teams hole at getting the 3 points when it is needed.

The defense though is the strength of the team. The pass rush of Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa has brought a fierce pass rush this year. Ingram who had 1 sack sunday and 0 for a couple of weeks before that the Chargers need Ingram to make his presence felt saturday and not go missing like his previous years. Denzel Perryman and Desmond King are coming off a solid game for both of them. Almost lost in the stardom of the new defense with Gus Bradley defensive scheme is outstanding play by Casey Heyward.

Arrowhead has been a house of disaster for the Chargers in recent years. Alex Smith can still beat you on any given sunday in which you don't know what Alex you're going to get. He threw for 268 yards against the Raiders and 331 yards just a week ago in a loss against the Jets. The Chargers 29th ranked defense will be tested by the running game of Kareem Hunt. The Chiefs also will get Marcus Peters back from a team suspension this week.

The Chargers this morning put RB Andre Williams on season ending IR.

The lights will shine bright over the Chargers and the Chiefs this saturday night. The prize is likely the AFC West Championship and a invite to the NFL Playoffs. This game will be very close. It's vital the Chargers start fast putting pressure on the Chiefs in front of what could be a tense home crowd. As always winning the turnover battle will benefit them greatly in controlling this game.

My Prediction: Chargers 27 Chiefs 24 in Overtime

Lets hope we don't see this

                                                       But instead this...
