WEEK ONE CHIEFS 38 CHARGERS 28
History has the Chargers at 435 wins 440 losses with 11 ties in their history. Overall they are 37-45 overall since Telesco took over after the 2012 season. They are 10-21 vs the AFC West under Telesco regime.
This offseason was full of hype and high expectations following winning 9 of their last 12 games. The NFL has a stake in the Chargers in LA and much of the commentary seemed to be more talking points than commentary.

Last season the Chargers beat teams with a combined record of 26-70. They also lost to teams with a combined record of 60-36. That 4 game winning streak where they beat teams like the Browns, Redskins, Bills, Cowboys and Denver made for good highlights. As you know, beating those teams don't give you a ticket to the playoffs. However, losing to teams like the Jaguars, Patriots, Eagles, Dolphins will probably keep you out of the playoffs. The Chargers are 3-7 in the last 10 years in week 1 games.
The Chargers and Philip Rivers put up some good stats last year. Fans of this team are used to gauging stat numbers. They're also used to losing and missing out on opportunities. In Rivers last 100 games he is 48-52. Those numbers won't get you into canton and you'd have to think he only has 3 years left in his career. Going 3-11 on 3rd downs won't either as they did Sunday.
Last Sunday was like Dejavu in the history of the Chargers. Thought to be the day to kill the demons of an 8 game divisional rival whipping coupled with such high expectations for the upcoming season. A 2nd year QB playing in only his 2nd game with a depleted defense on the road. Surely not even the Chargers could screw this up right?
By the time all was said done it was just like every other big game, the Chargers have played in throughout their history. Just another disappointing loss and a bag full of excuses
. Why don't the Patriots or Steelers have games full of mental errors and WTF coaching decisions? Why does it always seem to happen to the lesser teams? A big reason is leadership and coaching. The Chargers lack a vocal, everyone listens when he speaks leader.

Andy Reid has been preparing for this game since the schedules were released back in April. Andy Reid and former Charger Eric Bieniemy (KC Offensive Coordinator and former Charger) coming up with plays and schemes that would be creative and unexpected by the Charges. Anthony Lynn was graduating with his degree at this same time. Tyreek Hill took advantage of Craig Hayward who couldn't keep up with his speed and Kc exploited Joseph Addae inability to help deep in the middle of the defense.
Mahomes quickly executed a well thought out gameplan of several quick slants, play action passes and run-pass options. This helped Mahomes fend off the Chargers pass rush. They mustered up six QB hits and 1 sack against the new Kansas City QB. Ingram, Issac Rochelle and Chris Landrum could never get to Mahomes enough to disrupt his rhythm. Bosa is out until further notice. His cast is from his foot up to his knees. Uchenna Nwosu should see more snaps against Buffalo at the DE position this week. Reid called misdirection plays where the Chargers were the weakest and simple option plays. He did call a triple option with "orbit" motion once. This offense is going to be explosive. Philip Rivers did counter with two TD's thrown at Orlando Scandrick covering Allen and then Williams.

Andy Reid embarrassed Kyle Emanuel in two games last year. Anthony Sherman TD over the reach of Kyle Emanuel was predictable. He must've been foaming at the mouth every time the Chargers sent Emanuel onto the field Sunday. Emanuel got beat down for a 3rd time while Uchenna Nwosu played only 2 snaps. It seemed Andy Reid went right at Emanuel during his 13 defensive snaps. The Chargers players just never came close to matching the Chiefs intensity on the field. Even when the score was close, the game was not.
The Chargers RT Joe Barksdale went down early in the game. Joey Bosa was out and will continue to be out. The defensive line while they did create pressure didn't get to Mahomes. Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams couldn't catch a cold in Alaska on Sunday. Let alone a couple of would-be touchdowns that they both dropped. It's not like one of them isn't getting paid $8 million dollars or anything right? Antonio Gates played 33 snaps and missed 2 key blocks on the Chargers opening drive. Caleb Sturgis missed a field goal and JJ Jones had one of the worst performances a football player could ever have on Sunday. Rivers was 1-9 passing 20 yards or more. He was 33-39 within the 20-yard line and 3-11 on 3rd downs. The Chiefs did whatever they wanted against the Chargers defense.
The Chargers couldn't defend their home turf. They couldn't win in their division. They couldn't outnumber the Chiefs in the stands. They couldn't score enough points losing to KC 38-28. Was in that bad out there Sunday? Is all hope lost for the season and maybe Rivers hopes of playing in a Super Bowl sometime in his career? YES!!! It was bad but no not all is lost either. Let's examine...
This week they need to make some changes. Joseph Addae needs to play SS instead of FS. They can move Derwin James or try Adrian Phillips more but Addae is to slow and other teams will look to exploit that. 8 of Mahomes 9 passes were completed in the middle of the defense. Kyle Emanuel should not be in on passing downs. If anything gives Uchenna Nwosu a shot there.
With Barksdale out moving Schofield to RT and letting Lamp play RG makes more sense than starting Sam Tevi. Joey Bosa will be out till at least October. The pass rush against the Chiefs was unacceptable. Super Bowls teams have a great pass rush. I don't care about the "pressures" stats. I care about QB hits and they couldn't sniff Mahomes on Sunday. Jonathan Hankins could have freed up the edge rushers but he signed a 1 year deal with Oakland this week.
Should you be worried about Sunday? NO! The Bills are terrible and Josh Allen gets his 1st start. The charger have to travel across the country and play a 10am game but they can half-ass this game and still win. What they need to do is find out what works and doesn't in an actual game or the Rams will embarrass them badly the following week.
THE GOOD FROM WEEK 1
Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler produced unlike the most of the other players on the roster. They had 157 yards from the line of scrimmage in the final 5 minutes before the half. Austin Ekeler had 22 snaps and according to PFF was graded the highest in his career 91.2. The Chargers RB's caught 14 of 18 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. They combined for 292 yards from scrimmage.
Mike Williams had a career high 44 snaps and caught 5 out of his 6 targets for 81 yards.
Derwin James was impressive in his first game in the NFL. An opening drive interception batted down a ball in the endzone and got the teams only sack on Mahomes. He accumulated 3 tackles, 2 passes defensed and a sack.
THE BAD
Every player from the 46 of them that ran out there Sunday except Rivers, Allen, Ekeler, James and Gordon. It was a sloppy pathetic performance on a stage you could have shined in.
THE UGLY
The crowd was 50-50 Sunday. It wasn't as bad as last year but is a true embarrassment to the league. The Chargers average about 12,000 to 15,000 of their own fans in LA. The Padres average 27,463 a game this year at Petco.
NEXT UP THE BUFFALO BILLS
The Bills are not as bad as their 47-3 beatdown by the Ravens. The Bills defensive line was aggressive and productive only allowing 12 yards rushing by Baltimore 10 carries. Josh Allen makes his NFL starting debut against the Chargers. He like Mahomes can get lucky and surprise the Chargers secondary deep. He also a good scrambler. This will be a test for the Chargers run defense against LeSean McCoy. They do have a very good corner in TreDavious White who will be on Keenan Allen. The Chargers are going ton get Uchenna Nwosu more involved this week at DE. They have to find a way to create a pass rush because Joey Bosa isn't going to walk through that door for quite awhile. If the Chargers go to 0-2 the chances at the playoffs become almost nill. The early 10am game and cross country trip may have an effect but not enough to lose this one. That being said this game will be closer than most fans think.
