BACKSTAGE: CHARGERS
I missed the ending of the Eagles and Falcons game to watch the debut of Spectrum Sports Net documentary on the Chargers titled Backstage: Chargers. While it is clear watching it that it is a knockoff of the HBO hit "Hard Knocks". It is very well done and it unique as it's the first of its kind. No other show has aired in-season while taping during the season. It airs bi-weekly every Thursday for 30 minutes on Spectrum Sports Net. It is also replayed immediately after airing or by replay on ABC7 in L.A. and KFMB CH. 8 in San Diego on Friday night. You can stream the show on their Facebook page or using Google Play and Apple Podcasts.
The show begins with Derwin James (the Chargers 1st round draft pick) throwing out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium earlier this year. The segment then takes you into a pre-training camp dinner put on by John Spanos for the spouses of the Charger employees. "We didn't hit our goal last year but there is a lot to be excited about, Cheer for the spouses!"
After that rather useless clip, the voice-over begins as players start arriving for training camp at the end of July. Clips of sports analysts speaking about the high expectations surrounding this year's Charger team. Although Dean Spanos was never shown in the first episode and neither was Mark Fabiani. They might have been out at the Shamrock Tattoo shop on Sunset Blvd getting their free Charger tattoos.
The episode also took you into the hotel during training camp as Anthony Lynn was unpacking talking about how he hated training camp as a player for the Broncos early in his career which he won two Super Bowls with. He shared about growing up without a father and how important it is to remember to have fun while playing football.
The cameras then ventured into the wide receivers meetings who have been proclaimed by some to be the best in the NFL. That segment then transcended to Mike Williams. A few minutes were spent clearly hyping up the 2017 1st round draft pick. This adds to what could be a make or break season for the Clemson graduate.
The footage showed the Chargers-Saints scrimmage and then filmed as Philip Rivers was in the film room breaking down the Kansas City Chiefs. It showed Rivers coaching his son's football team and he shared his thoughts on the importance of being a dad and being involved in that role.
Overall, the show was professionally done and the access was very unique into the lives of the Chargers as individuals. The program is well worth your time to put aside to view it. . There will also be a live stream on the shows Facebook page.
