Roster predictions are about as useless as Draft predictions. However, that being said I feel pretty confident about this one. Keep in mind the deadline is tomorrow at 4est for teams to get to 53 players. At that point each player released goes through waivers. The other 31 teams have a chance to claim that said player. If they do they have to release one on their roster now. No team can go over 53 after 4pm tomorrow. There is a process of the waiver wire, Adding players to IR and the Pup list and so forth. On Sunday each team can select 10 players to be on their practice squad.
Corey Liuget is serving a 4 game suspension. He does not count to the 53 man roster until after week 4 is played. Patrick Afriyie will fill his roster spot until then but he won't be starting. If Antonio Gates is added it would be today or tomorrow. I'm sure Telesco will want to review teams final cuts and possible trade scenarios before making that decision. Jonathan Hankins is rumored to be signing with a team by Monday. He has talked to the Browns and the Chargers. If added Brandon Mebane would probably be released and the team solves a hole in the middle on their defensive line and free up $4.5 million in cap space. Presently, the Chargers are at $9 million. They can back load Hankins and easily fit him and Gates under the cap.
An expected number of 1200 players will be cut between today and tomorrow in the NFL. These men have families and dreams that could be thrown into chaos when the turk comes. The first cut of the day was the Houston Texans releasing Shane Lechler a NFL veteran drafted in the 2000 draft by the Oakland Raiders.
Put your seatbelt on the next two days could be a wild ride.
CHARGERS 53 MAN ROSTER BY THOMAS POWELL
QB Philip Rivers and Geno Smith
The Cardale Jones experiment has ended. Geno is more than capable of filling in for a game if needed. Enjoy Rivers while you can cause if he goes down the Chargers go with him sinking like the Titanic.
RB Melvin Gordon, Austin Ekeler and Detriz Newsome
This is as good as the Chargers have been at running back depth since LT, Turner and Sproles. Justin Jackson just couldn't give the coaches enough of a sample size due to injuries and Hansbrough while good just got out played by a Detriz Newsome. Earning him the honor of being the 22nd undrafted player to make the Chargers 53 man roster.
FB Derek Watt
Nothing to get too excited about. But there was no one on the roster who was upgrade over Watt.
\
TE Virgil Green Sean Culkin (Someone not currently on the roster)
WR Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, Mike Williams, Travis Benjamin, Artavis Scott and Geremy Davis.
One of the deepest units on the roster. Geremy Davis will be vulnerable if a player is added later of being released. For know though these two men Artavis Scott and Geramy Davis have earned a spot on this roster. Travis Benjamin and his $8 million dollar salary could be trade bait if Telesco finds a veteran TE that he wants to add. Can Mike Williams stay healthy for 16 games will be interesting to watch.
OFFENSIVE LINE Russell Okung, Dan Feeney, Mike Pouncey, Forest Lamp, Joe Barksdale, Michael Schofield, Sam Tevi, Scott Quessenberry, Spencer Pulley and Cole Toner.
The quality of the depth behind the starters is thin. The success of these men depend almost solely on Mike Pouncey being healthy. Let's hope that hip doesn't flare up.
DEFENSIVE LINE Melvin Ingram, Joey Bosa, Corey Liuget, Brandon Mebane, Damion Square, Chris Landrum, Isaac Rochelle, Justin Jones, Darius Philon, Whitney Richardson and Patrick Afriyie.
I think Rochelle could be the breakout player of the year. To win in the NFL you need quality QB play, a good edge rush and running game. These men will be counted on to bring the pressure and improve in stopping the run.
SECONDARY Joseph Addae, Derwin James, Rayshawn Jenkins and Adrian Phillips
James improves the speed and tackling issues that the 2017 unit suffered. These are four quality players that will benefit from the pass rush from the defensive lineman.
LINEBACKERS Denzel Perryman, Kyzir White, Hayes Pullard, Kyle Emanuel, Uchenna Nwosu, Nick Dzunbar and Jatavis Brown
Perryman is in the last year of his contract. He has to be out on the field if he wants to be a Charger in 2019. This unit let down the defense so many times last year. They seem to be a more developed and tougher unit this year.
DEFENSIVE BACKS Craig Hayward, Travis Williams, Craig Mager, Desmond King, and Michael Davis.
Mager was targeted 0 times through the first 3 preseason games. Tony Brown and Brandon Facyson couldn't develop fast enough with the limited snaps counts this preseason.
SPECIAL TEAMS K Caleb Sturgis P Drew Kaser LS Mike Windt
Why Sturgis? Because he received more guaranteed money that's why. This is a business decision.
PRACTICE SQUAD PROSPECTS Maximum 10 players
TE Braedon Bowman, DB Tony Brown, Brandon Facyson, A.J Hendy, Nic Shimonek, Justin Jackson, Zack Golditch, Andre Patton, Dylan Cantrell, Scott Wren, Trent Scott, JJ Jones and
