THE CHARGERS UPDATED DEPTH CHART Preseason Week 1

    Today the Chargers started to prepare for the Arizona Cardinals game this Saturday. The game is at 7pm in Glendale, Arizona. Today the Chargers released their unofficial depth chart for this week game to the media. There were a couple of surprises on there. First though, the injury list.

   WR Dylan Cantrell , G Forest Lamp,  DT Justin Jones (ankle injury) along with DE Joey Bosa are likely out Saturday. The starters (the 1st unit) will go for 1 or 2 series. After that Coach Lynn will begin to rotate the 2nd and 3rd string unit into the game.

              QUICK OBSERVATIONS

   The kick returner is listed as follows Desmond King, Artavis Scott, Austin Ekeler and JJ Jones.
   The Punt Returner is Travis Benjamin, Desmond King, Artavis Scott and JJ Jones

    DB undrafted from Alabama is way down the depth chart and not having a good camp either. But the 21 straight years of having an undrafted player make the 53 will live on. Brandon Facyson is having a good camp and with Verrett out the depth is needed. I think he's a lock for the 53 man roster. DT Bijhon Jackson and D'Juan Hines are having a good camp too. Steven Richardson can help the interior dline as well. A very good class this year of undrafted free agents.

   The Tight End group has Virgil Green as the #1 TE. He's followed by Braedon Bowman and Sean Culkin. Culkin beefed up 15 pounds in the offseason and is now the 3rd string TE. I believe it will be those 3 who will also be the ones to make the final roster in late August. Having Sean Culkin as a TE3 instead of a 2 was surprising. I expect Gates to sign in a couple of weeks.

   Rayshawn Jenkins is the starting safety over the rookie Derwin James. K Caleb Sturgis is listed as the #1 kicker and Roberto Aguayo is the 2nd kicker. The 53 won't have a kicker 2. They will only carry one kicker so the contract to Sturgis and from what the coaches have said, " It is Sturgis job to lose" he hasn't lost it yet. Neither have done much to seperate themselves from the other. The backup QB'S have Co-backups in Geno Smith and Cardale Jones. Nic Shimonek is the 4th QB and likely the practice squad QB when all is said and done.

   Kyle Emanuel is still the starter. Uchenna Nwosu will be with the two's and James Onwualu with the 3's.

   Jatavis Brown gets the nod ahead of Kyzir White followed by D'Juan Hines. With Bosa having the injury. Isaac Rochelle likely will get the start at DE. Corey Liuget, Darius Philon, Justin Jones and Steven Richardson fills out the DE for the Chargers.

   Another note would be the RB'S. Gordon is #1 followed by the 3rd down and endzone type of RB in Austin Ekeler. Even though all reports is Russell Hansbrough is beating out Justin Jackson who has been hampered with a hamstring throughout camp. Jones is the 3rd RB listed and right behind him is Hansbrough and then Detriz Newsome.

  This is the first glance at the depth chart in 2018 and is unofficial. Don't give too much weight to the current order until week 3 of the preseason vs the Saints. A link with the up to date depth chart for the Cardinals game is below.
