THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS IN SAN DIEGO!
LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!
The city of San Diego and their former team the now LA Chargers drama that started after the team relocated to LA has reached a new low ( or high as I freaking love this)! As I mentioned in a previous article here, Boltman was selling his costume on EBay and claimed it would be sold to the highest bidder with 50% of the proceeds going to help Rady's Children's Hospital here in San Diego.
The Boltman suit was for sale along with all of its full intellectual property rights to the Boltman character, including the Boltman Federal Trademark name (Reg. No: 2,392,990) and the character copyrights (Reg. No: Nu. VAu 1-118-263) for exclusive merchandising rights to the likeness of the Boltman head mask. There will be no restrictions to the purchase of the Boltman character for the winning bidder of this eBay auction.
Dan Jauregui who invented the character Boltman after the Chargers Super Bowl appearance in Jan of 1995 has stated he has spent over a $100,000 invested in the maintenance of the character over a span of 2 decades. He was never officially a mascot of the NFL nor the Chargers.
Boltman went on a local media tour to promote the online auction with Kusi, Times of San Diego, UT and 1090am. The Chargers never expressed any interest in buying the costume themselves and didn't return my messages when asked to commit. The Rams did respond through their Chief Operating Officer Kevin Demoff, "Thomas, I hope the sale raises a great amount for San Diego Children’s Hospital!"
He are some links to Boltman promoting the auction and the pledge to Children's Hospital.

BOLTMAN BOLTS OUT ON PLEDGE TO KIDS
The highest bid was $71,600. Dan said the auction did not meet his preset reserve. Dan decided the amount of the highest offer was to much of a negative loss when equaling all that was invested and so he choose not to sell the character after all. In the end, Children's Hospital received no donations as the Intellectual property, the trademarks and copyrights of Boltman was not sold. Dan has now asked Dean Spanos through media interviews to buy the costume for $100,000 and again with 50% going to Rady's Children's Hospital.
The Chargers did not ask Boltman to follow them to LA. One could argue that since the team left the city of SD the monetary value of the character could have crashed like Wall Street did in 1929. The team doesn't recognize Boltman in LA and there is no no masks can be wore outside of your seat at the Stubhub Center. The true value even with the copyrights, Trademarks, future revenue and intellectual property we can compare Boltman to the Panthers "official mascot" Sir Purr. Sir Purr, the Carolina Panthers mascot since 1995 makes $1500.00 a game. Purr Page is also been rated in the top 10-15 mascots in the NFL. Boltman never has ranked that high in any mascot popularity polls. I don't think to many people outside of San Diego and their three old divisional rival cities Oakland, KC and Denver even know what a Boltman is. What is the real non bias value for a homeless mascot of a team that moved? What is the expectant revenue if the character moves to LA? Money spent on an investment does not equal how much that investment is worth. Did Boltman screw the sick kids or does Dan have a point not wanting to lose more money?
Scott Kaplan has one of the most popular local sports talk radio shows in San Diego called the Scott and BR Show in the afternoon drive home from 3-6pm. Scott thought the $71,600 bid was gracious enough to proceed with the sell thus making the donation to the hospital as originally promoted by Boltman. Kaplan called Boltman out for his decision not to sell the costume. After Scott Kaplan had Boltman on the show to promote the auction. Boltman took offense to Scott criticism in a long angry rant on Boltman own facebook page.
THE ANGRY BOLTMAN
To sum up what Boltman said in his rant was "I'd rather burn the costume than have anything to do with Scott and the 1090 crew." He referred to Scott Kaplan as " Smoking crack". "They did nothing to promote the sell of this EBay auction. Shame on you Scott! Scott has turned into a full blown ass. That cheap SOB!"
Boltman then proceeded to challenge Kaplan to a 6 round boxing match (again the proceeds going to charity). "I will drop that chump like a bad habit in the 1st round". Boltman then hinted that Scott Kaplan and his producer Alex Padilla was smoking at the station and referred to Scott as "A complete loser"! Boltman called Scott Kaplan a bully on the radio. He wanted Kaplan to write a check to Children's Hospital for $35,000 and kept deferring his pledge to the charity with another fundraiser. Boltman proclaimed his character was an "Iconic Sports Figure"!

Who made their case better? Was it Boltman or Scott Kaplan? Do we even care anymore? Well, it's Saturday morning and we can have fun with this or talk about another Jason Verrett injury. Have a great weekend everybody!
