You can mock how this draft is going to go but there is some small things we do know. Telesco has expressed he is happy with the depth of the draft in the first round. No matter how things turn out he won't trade up. He will let the draft come to him. The draft has the top QB's going fast that we know. Don't discount yourelf to the belief that 4 QB's go in the first 5 picks. You have arguably the best Tackle to come out of the draft in years in Mike McGlinchey and also Guard Quentin Nelson who is the best guard in years. These men won't slide that far. Saquan Barkley is a lock to be successful in the NFL. The top 2 safeties in Fitzpatrick and Derwin should be a top 10 pick too.
But realistically, I think it safe to say Vita Vea, James Derwin, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Tremaine Edmunds will not be there at 17. McGlinchey could be a draft changer. And if he is on the board when it comes to the Chargers at 17 they may change their pick.
My belief is Barkley is taking by the Giants, Nelson by the Broncos, Edmunds by 49ers, Fitzpatrick by Skins, and Derwin by Bears. The Raiders would jump on Via in a minute if he survives to 12 which he should. That would leave on the board the positions of strength in LB, and DT.
Lamar Jackson who the team has spent extensive time with should be there at pick 17. He will not fall past the Jaguars so he's a RD 1 pick but it is unknown where he will go.
The Chargers have had a need at DT for years now dating back to Garay and Jamal departure. Yet Telesco has ignored the position and never token one higher than the 5th round. Telesco drafted safety back to back in RD 4 and 5 last year with Desmond King and Rayshawn Jenkins.
Every year fans scream we need a DT and every year Telesco doesn't give it value. He has stated he believes better LB play is what is needed to improve the last ranked run defense in the NFL from 2017. He stated that Corey Liuget contract will not be restructured nor will he be released. (Don't yell at me his words not mine).
What is Lynn thoughts on DT? He told us at the combine. Lynn stated he wanted a veteran DT because "playing DT in the NFL is a whole different ballgame than in college." So they could avoid drafting a DT then sign former Colts Jonathan Hankins https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/H/HankJo00.htm who is more than qualified than a rookie and would be a solid move.
Lynn on the QB Position,
"If you don't have a QB that can give you some movement then you have a dead offense". OUCH! With Lamar Jackson coming out of the draft and Whisenhunt was just with him as soon as couple of days ago, "“I think we do have to get a young quarterback on campus. We need to start developing someone because we have two veteran quarterbacks, and both of them are long in the tooth. I think they have some good years left in them; don’t get me wrong. But you have to start thinking about down the line, too…I would love for a young quarterback to get in here and learn from Philip. Philip is the ultimate pro in my opinion. We have a good situation for a young quarterback that does not have to come in and play right now. He can sit, watch and learn.”
“Taking care of the football is number one. That is something that we are going to do a lot better this year. Accuracy and leadership at that position. Whether you like it or not, you are the leader of that offense. Guys that can move the ball down the field and guys that can command their team. Get us in the right plays and right position. Read defenses. All those things. Mobility helps, especially for young quarterbacks (because) until they can figure it out, at least they can get out of harm’s way.”
Okay, so if LaMar Jackson is there at 17 they very well might pick him. If he is not and Payne, Via, Derwin, and McGlinchey are gone, where do they go? Where would you go? The following list is players (some I don't think will be there but included just in case) are almost a lock to be the Chargers 17th pick in the 2018 draft. I'll include some breakdowns with stats by Walter Football, Pro Football Reference and The Huddle Report with a draft profile by NFL.com. As you will see you honestly can't screw this pick up. Whoever you choose you will get a impact player for years to come. Jackson as well in the sense Whiz has said they could use him in the wildcat while he develops behind Rivers and start in the 2020 season after Rivers contract has expired.
Let's examine the prospects...
